Vacancy: Boutique and Gallery Supervisors

Summerhall is one of Edinburgh’s leading multi-arts venues, home to an exciting year-round programme of exhibitions, performances, and events. The Summerhall Arts Boutique offers a unique platform for local artists, artisans, and designers to showcase and sell their work within our thriving arts centre. 

Location: 1 Summerhall, Edinburgh EH9 1PL  

Rate of Pay:  £13.10 per hour + holiday pay  

We are Hiring for 2 positions with the following contracts: 

  • 12 week fixed term contract, minimum 13 hours per week 
  • 12 week fixed term contract, minimum 19.5 hours per week

What is the Job?   

We are looking for two Boutique and Gallery supervisors to look after our Visual Arts gallery spaces and the Summerhall Arts Boutique, an initiative that offers artists, artisans and designers the opportunity to sell their work within our thriving arts centre.  

Reporting to the Head of Visual Arts, the Boutique and Gallery supervisors will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth day to day running of the Summerhall Arts Boutique and visual arts galleries, providing excellent, informed and welcoming customer service while handling product and ticket sales as well as associated administration. This is a fast-paced, public-facing role that requires motivation, multitasking skills, and the ability to think on your feet. 

Standard shifts will be Wednesday – Sunday 10.30 – 5.30pm with occasional evenings for special events. A monthly rota will be allocated 2 weeks in advance.   

What will you be doing?  

  • Sales and Customer Service
  • Ticket, voucher and membership sales through red 61 ticketing system 
  • Opening, closing and monitoring of the galleries and exhibitions
  • Boutique and gallery housekeeping
  • Stock and inventory management and administration
  • Issuing participant contracts
  • Social media
  • Artist / designer recruitment and communication
  • Sales report generation
  • Assisting the Head of Visual Arts with administration and departmental duties

Who are you?

  • Enthusiastic and approachable – you enjoy meeting people and helping visitors, artists, and customers get the most out of their experience at Summerhall. 
  • Motivated and hardworking – you can stay calm under pressure, juggle multiple tasks, and keep things running smoothly during busy periods. 
  • Experienced in sales and customer service, ideally within a retail, gallery, or event setting. 
  • Passionate about the arts, with an excitement for Summerhall’s Visual Arts programme and a genuine interest in championing independent artists and designers. 
  • An excellent communicator – confident, friendly, and professional in person, in writing, and online. 
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with strong administration skills, including confident use of Microsoft Excel and Adobe Acrobat. 
  • Reliable and proactive, with good timekeeping and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively. 
  • A team player who enjoys collaborating with others but is equally comfortable working independently when required. 
  • Experience of using systems such as Red61 ticketing or stock management software would be an advantage, though full training will be provided.

  • You communicate clearly, work collaboratively, and take initiative to keep things running smoothly.
