SHA x HBF: In Vitro Visual Arts Residency

The In Vitro Residency will launch in 2026 as a joint residency with Summerhall Arts and the Hugo Burge Foundation. The residency includes 24-hour access to your own studio in the iconic Summerhall building in central Edinburgh with the opportunity to exhibit in a gallery on-site between the 31st of May and 27th of June 2026

This opportunity was created for visual artists who cannot step away from their life for weeks at a time for accommodated residencies. Instead, it will offer artists the time, space, and community of our regular residencies but with the freedom to come and go — to create in bursts, to stay connected to home, and to weave their practice alongside the rest of their lives, including work commitments.

What’s Included

  • Unlimited, exclusive access to the In Vitro Studio – 24/7 for 12 weeks
  • A £1,200 stipend
  •  Mentoring throughout the residency
  • One month’s use of a dedicated gallery space for a solo exhibition, presentation, or installation of new work.
  • Curatorial support, installation and technical assistance, invigilation, and coordination of a public launch event for the exhibition by Summerhall Arts
  • The opportunity to deliver one publicly accessible workshop, with a £200 materials budget, 2 days of payment at Scottish Artists Union recommended rates for development and delivery of the workshop, marketing and promotional support for the workshop, and logistical and administrative assistance with workshop and exhibition logistics
  • Integration into the Summerhall Arts and Hugo Burge Foundation creative networks and wider communities

Please note that accommodation is not provided as this residency is aimed at people who are already living and working in Edinburgh or within commuting distance to Summerhall.
